Baby and toddler die in house fire

12 April 2012

Two boys aged six months and 18 months died in a fire at a house, police said. A three-year-old boy, a man and a woman escaped unharmed from the blaze in Peterborough, Cambs.

Investigators were trying to establish the cause of the fire, but police said they were not treating it as suspicious.

Meanwhile, two people died after a separate house fire, police said. Emergency services were called to the blaze at a three-storey semi-detached property in Spalding, Lincolnshire, in the early hours.

Two people, a man and a woman whose ages are not known, were pulled from the building by firefighters and subsequently died of their injuries.

Seven engines attended the scene shortly after 3.30am and found the first and second floors well alight, Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service said.

A search of both sides of the semi-detached building in Winsover Road, which is divided into flats, was carried out by fire crews.

The road and nearby level crossing were closed to allow easy access for emergency vehicles.

A fire service spokesman said the cause of the blaze remained unknown and that a joint police investigation was under way.
