BA strike aversion talks adjourned

12 April 2012

Talks aimed at averting a strike by thousands of British Airways cabin crew have been adjourned and will resume on Wednesday.

Leaders of the Transport and General Workers Union spent several hours in talks with BA managers in a bid to resolve a bitter row over sickness absence, pay and staffing.

There was no indication of whether any progress was made during the talks, held at BA's headquarters at Heathrow Airport.

Earlier BA's chief executive Willie Walsh said he was keen to head off a strike but he made it clear that sickness absence had to be tackled.

Cabin crew used to take an average of 22 days off sick a year before a new regime was introduced almost two years ago.

That figure has been cut to 12 but is still more than the national average of seven.

The meeting followed a massive 96% vote in favour of strikes by union members.

A spokesman for BA said: "We will be meeting with T&G officials again on Wednesday in a bid to find a peaceful outcome that would protect the travel plans of our customers.

"We have made clear to the T&G our commitment to keep talking for as long as it takes in our search for a breakthrough."
