Ash cloud causes more travel misery

The ash cloud continues to cause disruption to flights
12 April 2012

Air passengers are facing more disruption as the Icelandic volcanic ash cloud causes further delays and cancellations.

British Airways and Virgin Atlantic are among the carriers whose passengers are suffering long delays to transatlantic services.

Some London-bound flights departing from the US are arriving up to three hours late at Heathrow and Gatwick airports.

Among services cancelled by budget carrier easyJet are those to and from Barcelona and Madrid in Spain and Faro in Portugal. Ryanair has cancelled dozens of flights to and from destinations in Spain, Portugal and the Canary Islands. BAA said all of its airports are open.

Ryanair said on its website: "Based on current Euro Control and meteorological forecasts Ryanair expects airspace over Faro (Portugal) and Madrid to be closed/restricted during Tuesday."

Latest meteorological charts show the ash cloud extending across the Atlantic into Spain and Portugal, and further east over France.

The ash cloud has closed seven Spanish airports, including those in the Canary islands of Tenerife, La Palma and La Gomera, affecting dozens of tourist flights.

On mainland Spain, airports at Seville and Jerez in the south and Badajoz in the east were closed.

Spain also still has restrictions on planes flying between 20,000ft and 35,000ft, mainly affecting transatlantic flights to and from other European countries.

Airports and airlines continued to urge passengers to check the latest information before travelling to their airport.
