Airman dies in Iraq rocket attack

12 April 2012

A British airman has died after a rocket attack on his base in southern Iraq, the Ministry of Defence said.

The serviceman, who was attached to 903 Expeditionary Air Wing, Royal Air Force, was killed when Basra air base came under fire on Friday night.

His next of kin have been informed, the MoD said.

This takes the British military death toll in Iraq since hostilities began in March 2003 to 175.

There have been relatively few fatalities since troops withdrew from a base at Basra Palace to the city's airport in September.

Since then three service personnel have died following vehicle accidents and three members of the SAS have been killed on operations.
