The mother of a “danger tourist” who went on holiday to Kabul days before it fell to the Taliban said she had no idea he had gone there — but is relieved he is safe.

Loughborough University student Miles Routledge was evacuated to Dubai on a military flight out of Afghanistan.

His mother Susan said: “I am very relieved he is safe. But I am still in a bit of shock that he was even there. I had no idea until I saw some of his posts.”

Mrs Routledge said it would be at least another 10 days before they can be reunited as he will have to go into a quarantine hotel on his return to the UK.

Afghanistan is on the red list of countries on the UK’s Covid traffic light system.

It means the student will have to pay £2,285 for a 10-day stay before he is allowed to return to the family home in Sutton Coldfield. The 21-year-old, who has previously boasted of travelling to a Chernobyl, has been fiercely criticised for holidaying in Afghanistan.

One critic said: “Your seat on a plane home should have been given to an Afghan interpreter who faces death.”
