After having spent days under the relentless gaze of an adoring public, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will tonight be enjoying a private, romantic night in a remote South Pacific Island resort.

William and Kate have escaped from the hustle and bustle of the Honiara - the capital of the Solomon Islands - and are staying in idyllic circumstances on the island of Tavanipupu. Surrounded by a blue lagoon where the couple plan to go swimming before leaving, it is the quintessential honeymoon destination.

Their small thatched £800-a-night bungalow, paid for by the Solomon Islands government, had champagne and fresh fruits in the fridge and a candle-lit dinner awaiting their arrival.

And as with any other guest checking in, Pamela Kimberly, 64, co-owner of the resort, took them too their leaf-thatched bungalow to show them "just how to switch on the lights and aircon, that kind of thing".

Ms Kimberly added that no detail had been ignored: "I really wanted them to feel like they had everything they need. The fridge is fully stocked, the finest champagne, fresh fruit platter, high-tech cappuccino machine. I had a bladeless fan system installed above their bed.

The couple have been easy customers, she said. "We've had all sorts of requests from VIPs. People who have wanted to bring private chefs, fly in furniture and so on. But the Duke and Duchess are so down to earth. They haven't asked for one thing."

In the morning, local time, the royal couple will travel on the final leg of their Diamond Jubilee tour to one of the smallest countries in the world, the island nation of Tuvalu.
