50 evacuated in care home blaze

12 April 2012

Firefighters were tackling a major blaze at a care home in Scotland.

The fire, at Douglas View Care Centre on William Street in Hamilton, broke out just before around 7am, Strathclyde Police said.

Police said 50 residents had been evacuated from the building, but could not confirm reports that residents were trapped inside.

Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Service described the blaze in the two-storey building as a major incident. Eight fire appliances were at the scene.

Douglas View is run by Southern Cross Healthcare, and provides nursing, residential and respite care for the elderly and younger people with physical disabilities.

A nearby resident in William Street, who asked not be named, said: "There are fire engines and ambulances everywhere. We have been blocked in and there's a helicopter.

"We saw them putting the old people in ambulances with blankets wrapped round them."

Carolyn Dempster, whose bedroom overlooks the home, said: "I can't see any flames or smoke, just lots of emergency services. There's no blacked-out windows either"

A spokesman for South Lanarkshire Council said residents evacuated from the privately-run home were being taken to a local care centre.

He said: "We have people there from our social work resources and we're opening up one of our nearby facilities to provide shelter. We're doing everything that we possibly can."
