2015 in review: The best pictures of the past 12 months

1/27

Madonna taking a tumble at the Brits, basketball players showing the Pope a trick and Boris Johnson colliding with a Japanese schoolboy conjure up very different memories over the past 12 months.

However they all feature among the Evening Standard's best pictures of the year as we feature nearly 30 of the most striking images captured in 2015.

From politics and conflicts to celebrities and the downright bizarre we bring you our favourite pictures taken in the last year.

They include the jaw-dropping moment pop superstar Madonna fell backwards down a set of stairs during her performance at the Brit Awards in February.

That happened just three days after Eddie Redmayne's joyous reaction at winning the Oscar for best actor following his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in hit film The Theory of Everything.

Other images that made it into our gallery include the Pope mingling with basketball players Harlem Globetrotters when the exhibition team visited the Vatican in April.

In May, Prince Charles and Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams were pictured shaking hands at the National University of Ireland in Galway in what was seen as an historic gesture.

The greeting between them looked far warmer than when Presidents Barack Obama and Vladimir Putin met at the United Nations General Assembly in New York in September.
