Video shows mother pulling child to safety after buggy rolls onto train track in Surrey

Rescue bid: the mother chases the buggy onto the tracks

Shocking images have emerged showing the moment a baby in a pushchair rolls off a train platform and onto live tracks.

The terrifying CCTV captures the buggy rolling onto the tracks after the child's mother leaves the brakes off as she buys a ticket.

Miraculously, the baby escaped with only minor injuries after the mother dramatically comes to the rescue and plucks it from the tracks at Whyteleafe station near Caterham, Surrey.

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch has now concluded incident - which happened last September - was a result of the mother not applying the brakes and leaving the pushchair on the station's sloped platform.

The CCTV was released after the RAIB's investigation finished, just days after a similar film showed the heart-stopping moment a woman came to the rescue after a gust of wind blew a buggy onto the tracks seconds before a train pulled in at Goodge Street station in central London.

A Southern Railway spokesman said: “This was a distressing incident. Southern fully co-operated with the RAIB on the investigation and has implemented recommendations made in the report to try and prevent this happening again, including warning posters, advice in our accessibility guide and working with Network Rail to take into account platform slopes when any resurfacing or upgrade work is undertaken. We would also remind all users of pushchairs or wheelchairs to apply the brakes when stationary on a platform.”
