Passengers on the Piccadilly and Victoria lines were today hit with severe delays with some describing it as travel "hell".

London’s first Monday of the year without any strikes on its transport network saw Tube passengers hit with delays for most of the day on two of the Underground’s busiest lines.

Emergency engineering work to fix a signal failure at Euston station on Monday morning left passengers on the Victoria line forced to wait as trains were held up.

The delays led to overcrowding at Tube stations Green Park, Finsbury Park and Kings Cross as hoards of people instead tried to take the Piccadilly Line.

Commuters feared disruption would continue through the evening rush hour but delays gradually began to ease.

Many passengers complained about the delays on the two lines.

Luana D’Elias said her Victoria line journey was “hell this morning” while Sophie Corcinos said the busy journey made her feel claustrophobic.

Comedian Patrick Monahan posted a photo of his 23 minute wait for a train and said: "It's 23 mins to get a tube from Finsbury Park to Highbury & Islington! I could MoonWalk it between the 2 stops quicker while playing a flute."

When it was announced that service had resumed on the Victoria line following the morning signal failure, Paul Corfield said on Twitter: “What on earth went wrong that took 5.5 hrs to fix? Broken rail?”

The Piccadilly line has recently repaired more than half of its trains because of faulty wheels damaged by the wet weather.

The line - which is the fourth busiest on the London Underground network - also saw delays between Acton Town to Uxbridge to stop stations becoming overcrowded.

Hounslow West station was also temporarily shut.

A Transport for London spokesman said: “We apologise for the disruption to customers using the Victoria line, caused by a track fault in the Euston area.

"Our engineers are on site and are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.”
