UK's worst parking street revealed: motorists hit with £1.7m fines in east London

Lucrative: Cranbrook Road in Ilford

Motorists have been hit by £1.7 million in parking fines in just one London street.

A staggering 35,344 tickets were handed out on the 2.2-mile Cranbrook Road in Ilford, making it the UK’s worst street for parking fines.

Residents claim that parking wardens target pay-and-display bays on the busy shopping street, often pouncing the minute a car overstays its time. Revenue from the fines goes to Redbridge council.

Raj Kumar, who runs a travel agency in the street, said: “They will completely finish us off. Businesses are closing up and down the road. People used to come and park and do their shopping. Now they go to the big shops with their own car parks.”

Official figures for parking fines and penalties for similar offences show that the top 10 grossing roads are all in London.

Almost £1 million was raised from motorists using the bus lane in Clapham Park Road, Lambeth, and restrictions in Old Broad Street earned about £980,000 for the City of London Corporation.

The AA said: “These honeypot streets for penalties should be better signed and drivers better deterred from stopping in the first place.”
