Tube staff on a London Underground line are set to stage a two-day strike in a row over proposed changes to duties.

A Rail and Maritime Transport union (RMT) spokesman said a small number of Waterloo and City line workers were being asked to do "more work for less money".

Union members who work in the route's control room will walk out from 9pm next Monday until 11pm the following evening.

The level of disruption it will cause was not immediately clear. The two-stop route, which connects Waterloo and Bank, is popular with City commuters.

An "abject failure" by Tube bosses to address "regrading" issues is behind the strike action, the RMT said.

“[London Underground] management must be clear by now on our members legitimate and reasonable demand for regrading.

"The union has re-iterated that we will not accept an offer which is based on a change in staff duties or which would cause a detriment to other members."

Waterloo and City line operations director Peter McNaught said managers were working on a plan to minimise disruption on the line if the event the action went ahead.

"We’ve been in extensive discussions with the RMT over this issue during the past year and we’ve presented various options to bring this dispute to an end," Peter McNaught added.

"These have included exploring development opportunities to help progress the careers of the staff concerned as well as allocating additional responsibilities that would justify a salary increase.

“Unfortunately all of these options have been rejected outright by the RMT who appear determined to demand more money for no additional work or responsibility. We remain committed to discussions with the RMT representatives and I urge them to consider the options we’ve proposed rather than threaten industrial action."
