Transport for London was forced to apologise after a noticeboard urging passengers to "dress for the body you have" sparked controversy.

The transport body was accused of "bodyshaming" by one passenger who shared a picture of the 'Thought for the Day' message board at Blackhorse Road station.

It read: "During this heatwave please dress for the body you have... Not the body you want!"

TfL said an investigation into the "insensitive message" is underway, adding that the notice was "clearly ill-judged" and has been removed.

After the post was shared on Twitter it was met with outrage, with many voicing their upset.

One person wrote: "I am so very tired of TFL wit and wisdom. Especially when neither is demonstrated."

Another said: "Thanks for pointing this out, larger people need to keep cool too."

The passenger later received a response from TfL which said staff at the station had been alerted to remove the message.

A TfL spokesman told the Standard: “We apologise unreservedly to customers who were offended by the insensitive message on the whiteboard at Blackhorse Road station.

"Our staff across the network share messages on these boards, but in this instance the message was clearly ill-judged and it has been removed.

"An investigation is underway to establish who thought such an unacceptable message was a good idea, so that the appropriate action can be taken."
