Transport for London has failed to find a sponsor for this year’s New Year’s Eve free travel scheme.

Drinks giant Dieageo picked up the tab between 2011 and 2013, but this year TfL will foot the bill as transport chiefs assured Londoners the annual concession will continue.

The scheme allows free travel from 11.45pm December 31 to 4.30am on January 1 on the Tube, buses, Docklands Light Railway and Tramlink.

While TfL has so far not been able to find a replacement, it has said it is still seeking one.

TfL's commercial development director Graeme Craig, said: "Londoners and visitors to the capital can be assured that they will be able to get home, for free, on our transport network this New Year's Eve.

"We haven't yet secured sponsorship for this New Year's Eve but we're always seeking sponsorship to complement our operational business wherever we can and will continue to do so."

Caroline Pidgeon leader of the Liberal Democrats on the London Assembly, said it was "incredible" that no sponsor was in place "despite having had three years to find one".
