A change was made to the Transport for London annual report after Sir Peter Hendy, the Transport Commissioner, appeared to try and justify large pay packets made to transport chiefs during Olympic year.

He wrote they could have earned more working in the private sector — but this was removed before the final version of the report was published.

Sir Peter nearly doubled his pay packet last year receiving more than £652,000 after getting bonuses totalling £319,000. Three of the capital’s transport chiefs earned more than £500,000 in total. In the TfL annual report presented to the audit and assurance committee on 19 June Sir Peter ended his forward: “I have never worked so hard in my life..."

He continues: “And, lest it be misunderstood, they do this at a huge discount to the salary, performance related pay and benefits equivalent to the positions they could occupy in the private sector.”

When the report was published two weeks ago those words missing. A TfL spokesman rejected any suggestion the Mayor had ordered this. He said the decision to remove the private sector reference had been taken by Sir Peter and Vernon Everitt, TfL managing director customer experience marketing, because “it was not necessary to say that”.
