Southern delays: Lightning strike sparks major disruption to main line and Overground services

Disruption: Commuters faced delays thanks to freak weather conditions

London commuters tonight faced rush hour chaos thanks to signal faults sparked by a lightning strike.

Overground and main line Southern Railway services through south London met with major delays as freak thunderstorms spelled misery for people across the capital.

Roads flooded and the London Fire Brigade were called out to nearly 30 incidents including homes being swamped by rain water – while just 65 miles away Cambridge basked in summer sunshine.

Network Rail apologised to passengers affected by the lightning strike near Peckham in south London and said engineers were working to restore signalling.

Southern Railway also tweeted a warning to commuters, saying: “Due to lightning damaging the signalling system between Queens Road Peckham and #PeckhamRye all lines are blocked.”

According to Transport for London, there was no service on the popular Overground route between Surrey Quays and Clapham Junction because of the lightning strike.
