Bus crash: The number 15 bus hit a bollard causing delays

Six people were injured today after a double-decker bus crashed into bollards outside a busy London rail station at rush hour.

Eye witnesses said the vehicle careered across the road before “slamming” into the bollards at Cannon Street station in the City shortly after 7am.

Rush-hour workers watched in amazement as driver of the double decker then reversed off the pavement - straight into another stationary bus.

The incident shut Cannon Street for several hours during the entire morning peak causing travel chaos for thousands of City workers.

The crash - the second serious accident due to driver error in recent weeks - is certain to raise questions about Transport for London’s driver safety training.

One eyewitness tweeted: “Cannon Street is a mess of police & ambulances. Bus slammed into the bollards outside the station and then reversed into another bus!”

Another tweeted: “Bus crash outside Cannon Street station. The bus went across the road and hit the station bollards.”

Fire, police and ambulance services were all called to treat those who were injured.

Four passengers were treated for cuts and bruises. A woman in her 60s received a shoulder injury, a man in his 50s suffered a leg injury, a woman in her 40s had cuts to her head and a man in his 30s received a minor cut to his head.

All four were taken to the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel for treatment although none of their injuries was described as serious.

A man in his 60s and a woman in her 50s were treated at the scene.

A London Ambulance spokesman: “There was a bus in collision with street furniture. We treated three persons at the scene and they have been taken to the Royal London hospital but not as a priority.”

Mike Weston, TfL’s Director of Buses, said: “At around 07:20 this morning a route 15 double deck bus, operated by Stagecoach, collided with a bollard in Cannon Street, EC2. The bus subsequently collided with a stationary route 521 bus. Emergency services attended the scene and an investigation will be launched into the incident.”

Cannon Street was closed in both directions with routes 15, 17 and 521 buses placed on local diversion.

Last month a new Routemaster bus smashed into queuing traffic after the driver allegedly took a wrong route in Battersea.

Three people, including the driver, were seriously injured in the collision which involved two other buses and two cars.
