Ryanair to launch flights to the US that 'could cost as little as £10' each way

Expansion: low cost airline Ryanair looks set to venture into the transatlantic market
Standard Reporter16 March 2015

Budget airline Ryanair is set to launch transatlantic flights that “could cost as little as £10”, according to reports.

The company’s board today approved plans to fly to up to 14 US cities – which it is thought could include New York, Boston, Chicago and Miami – as well as new European destinations.

The services, which could use London Stansted as the UK hub, are expected to start in four or five years’ time.

The Guardian newspaper today quoted a company spokesman as saying the proposals "included one-way transatlantic fares beginning at £10", but when contacted by The Standard Ryanair refused to comment on pricing plans.

“The board of Ryanair, like any PLC, have approved the business plans for future growth, including transatlantic,” the company said in a statement.

“European consumers want lower cost travel to the USA and the same for Americans coming to Europe. We see it as a logical development in the European market.”

“We would like to offer low cost flights between 12-14 European cities and 12-14 US cities. The business plan is there but it's dependent on attaining viable long haul aircraft and we estimate that's four to five years away.”
