Ryanair to cancel 18,000 more flights as chaos set to last all winter

Chloe Chaplain28 September 2017

Crisis-struck airline Ryanair is cancelling another 18,000 flights between November and March.

The cancellations are the result of the temporary suspension of 34 routes and will impact 400,000 passengers.

It comes after the company was already forced to cancel up to 50 flights a day until the end of October due to a “mess up” over pilots annual leave allocation.

The airline said it emailed all of the customers affected and offered them the choice between a refund or an alternative flight.

Routes that will be suspended include London Stansted to Edinburgh and Glasgow, Gatwick to Belfast, Newcastle to Faro, and Glasgow to Las Palmas.

Michael O’Leary apologised for the disruption

Ryanair’s Michael O’Leary “sincerely” apologised to customers for the disruption but said the cancellations were “sensible”.

“While over 99 per cent of our 129m customers will not have been affected by any cancellations or disruptions, we deeply regret any doubt we caused existing customers last week about Ryanair’s reliability, or the risk of further cancellations.” he said.

The company said the cancellations were en example of their “slower growth” plans, which they say “will create lots of spare aircraft and crews which will allow us to manage the exceptional volumes of annual leave we committed to delivering in the 9 months to Dec 2017”.

Company bosses said the slower growth will “eliminate all risk of further flight cancellations”.
