Commuters faced chaos at Romford station this morning after it was closed to passengers due to overcrowding.

Hundreds were left standing outside in the street and passengers criticised Transport for London, which operates the station, for failing to keep them informed.

The overcrowding was reportedly caused by an earlier signal failure at Harold Wood.

Aisling O'Brien tweeted: "@TfLRail terrible communication at romford station as 100s stand outside on the street confused."

While another Twitter user said: "Appalling treatment of passengers at #Romford #cattle"

And Aaron Kumar said: "It really is a shambles. I was waiting for ages in Romford then not given any real information or updates."

Transport for London, runs the rail line from London Liverpool Street to Shenfield.

A TfL spokesperson said: “We would like to apologise for the delays and cancellations this morning on TfL Rail. These were caused by a signal failure and overhead line issues at Harold Wood. There was also a door fault at Forest Gate.

“During very busy periods, some stations need to close for short periods to prevent overcrowding. London Underground were accepting tickets by any reasonable route but a good service should resume shortly."
