A south-east London train station was closed after a dead body was found on the tracks.

Police cars and ambulances arrived at Plumstead station at around 6.30am on Wednesday following the discovery.

The station was closed off and Southeastern trains on the Woolwich line were disrupted during the morning rush hour with a swathe of track from Charlton to Slade Green blocked.

Trains from Charing Cross and Cannon Street to and from Barnehurst were being affected.

One commuter tweeted: “SE London commuters hoping to get to Centre stay away from @Se_Railway.

“Incident at Plumstead, big delays and crowding.”

British Transport Police (BTP) confirmed they had been called at 6.25am after the body was found near the station and the death was being treated as “unexplained”.

A BTP spokesman said: “The man was declared dead at the scene. The death is being treated as unexplained while officers work to establish the exact circumstances of how he came to be on the tracks.

“They are also working to identify him and inform his next of kin.”

Southeastern said the line reopened at around 9.15am but some residual disruption was expected.

Tickets were being accepted on London buses, which are also on diversion near the station, and the DLR.

Anyone with information should call BTP on 0800 40 50 40 or text 61016, quoting reference 76 of 28 June.
