Night Tube trains drivers are poised to vote for strike action in row over pay and working conditions, just six months after 24-hour operation began, union leaders say.

The RMT and Aslef unions ordered strike ballots covering the Central, Victoria, Northern, Jubilee and Piccadilly lines, in a complex dispute over working conditions and overtime pay.

The result of the RMT ballot was being announced later on Tuesday with the Aslef result due on Thursday.

Finn Brennan, Aslef district organiser, said: “We expect a big yes vote.

“But we are in talks with management and hope we can settle this without industrial action.”

Mick Cash, the RMT leader said the Night Tube agreement, different from that covering other drivers, is “blatantly discriminatory” in that it prevents promotion and overtime pay does not apply until after the driver has exceeded 35 hours in a week.

The Night Tube began last August on the Central and Victoria lines, nearly a year later than planned because Tube and union bosses could not reach agreement on the complex shift arrangements, pay and working conditions.
