This was the bizarre moment a rail passenger coped with overcrowding triggered by the Rugby World Cup by climbing into a luggage rack.

Great Western Railway, which runs services between London and Cardiff and recently rebranded from First Great Western, admitted it had "underestimated" how many people would be travelling to the Welsh city for a match betwen Ireland and Canada on Saturday.

Scores of angry fans took to Twitter to complain about stuffy carriages and overcrowding.

Among them was Tom Witney, who wrote: "Why is packed train to Cardiff not moving? Not a single announcement - not enough air to breathe! #shambles."

He also posted one man's extreme attempt to escape the overcrowding.

Passengers across the route were affected.

Another user, Kieran Grehan, appeared to be making his way to the Wales-Uruguay game on Sunday.

He wrote: "Chaos & unsafe yday going to Cardiff for the rugby, sounds like same today! What will be done for the rest of the games to stop this?"

Great Western Railway (GWR) responded to criticism on Twitter by claiming it had not foreseen the level of the demand for travel during the tournament, which England was awarded in 2009.

And it comes with Wales visiting England at Twickenham this Saturday for an 8pm kick-off.

"We acknowledge there is severe overcrowding at Paddington and for services going into Wales," it wrote.

"We apologise for underestimating this."

Warning of disruption earlier in the day, the company had asked passengers to stagger their journeys.

"Sorry rugby trains busy today, extra services running tonight. Queues likely, if you can, please stagger your return journeys," it said.
