One person has been seriously injured and a major stretch of motorway between Gatwick and London is closed after eight vehicles were involved in a crash.

Two lorries and six other vehicles crashed on the M23 northbound on Thursday morning.

One of the cars overturned and the diesel tank of a HGV, which was also involved, has ruptured spilling fuel across the road.

Police, firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the crash at 11.20am.

A South East Coast ambulance spokesman said one person was taken to the severe trauma theatre at St George's Hospital in Tooting.

He added that three response vehicles and two ambulances were sent to the scene. Another person suffered minor injuries.

The northbound carriageway was closed from Junction 9 to Junction 8 while emergency services responded.

Police said it was likely to remain closed for a "prolonged period".

One witness Zoltan Szentpeteri tweeted: “M23, this is not looking good. I have been here over an hour. Eight car/lorry accident. The number of emergency vehicles must be close to 20.”
