A lorry sparked train disruption in south London after colliding with a railway bridge.

The lorry collided with the bridge, near Balham Underground and National Rail stations, early on Sunday evening.

Train services were stopped from passing over as Network Rail inspectors assessed the structure.

One witness at the scene claimed the lorry drove off after initially getting stuck under the bridge.

Normal train services resumed at about 5.30pm, though a Network Rail spokeswoman warned: "We urge drivers to check the heights of their vehicles.

"Bridge strikes are entirely preventable and we are working alongside other key transport industries to raise awareness of the problem and look at ways in which we can work together to reduce incidents.

“We're sorry to anyone who experienced disruption because of this incident."

Transport for London (TfL) was also forced to temporarily divert its 155, 249 and 355 bus services as police dealt with the incident in Balham High Road.
