A person has died after being hit by a train near one of London's busiest transport hubs.

Liverpool Street station was brought to a standstill as emergency services dealt with the incident on Thursday afternoon.

British Transport Police officers were called shortly after 4.30pm to part of the line close to Ingatestone station in Essex following reports of a person hit by a train.

The person was pronounced dead at the scene and the incident is being treated as unexplained, police said.

Network Rail warned of "major disruption" to journeys between Liverpool Street and Chelmsford, saying there could be long delays or cancellations.

Tickets were being accepted on alternative routes, Greater Anglia said.

The operator added: "We apologise for the disruption to train service this evening."

Transport for London advised people to consider alternative routes due to the station being "extremely busy".

The disruption was expected to last until at least 10pm.
