Hammersmith flyover FINALLY reopens fully

28 May 2012

The Hammersmith Flyover finally reopened fully today after it was partially closed for more than five months of repairs.

Transport bosses shut the vital A4 route, which is used by about 90,000 vehicles a day, because of problems with cables that hold the concrete structure in place causing huge delays.

It partially reopened in January but lorries have been banned from using it until today.

The bridge was damaged by a seepage of salt water which weakened the structure.

Although the road has been reopened in time for the Games, TfL said it would need to return to the structure next year to strengthen the remaining spans. They said the work would be carried out where possible with no weight or lane restrictions and “minimal closures”.
