Commuters on three Tube lines are facing evening rush hour disrupion after a major signalling problem on Monday morning caused a day of travel problems.

The Piccadilly and Hammersmith and City lines are still suffering from severe delays, although the District and Circle lines are now running trains as normal.

Transport for London said engineers are working hard to get services back to normal ahead of thousands of workers descending onto the London Underground network.

On Monday morning, passengers reported being trapped on stationary Tube trains between stations for more than an hour because of the power failure, which struck at around 9.30am.

Other commuters were forced to take crowded buses or walk to work instead.

By 10.30am services were back up and running although lines were still operating with severe delays throughout the day.

Passenger Dean Hoadley said on Twitter: “How on earth can this still be going on from 9.45 this morning! Completely unacceptable!”

Transport for London apologised by the delays and pledged to automatically refund all customers who were affected.
