A man was arrested today after sparking panic as he 'chanted and behaved strangely' while walking between Tube carriages during rush hour.

Police were dispatched to Charing Cross station after passengers pushed the emergency stop button on the Bakerloo Line and ran from the carriages.

Part of the line was shut down as police dealt with the disturbance.

Television producer Ian Lynch, 38, said the whole train fled in panic.

He said: “This guy was walking through the carriages chanting.

“We got to Charing Cross and someone pushed the alarm. There was some sort of noise further down the train and then we saw about 80 people running along the platform to the exit to get out.

“One guy was shouting: ‘Get out, get out, it’s not safe.’

“Then everyone got out. I was not going to take a risk.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said the incident occurred at 9.20am.

He said: “BTP officers were called to Charing Cross London Underground following the report of a man causing a disturbance onboard a Bakerloo line train.

“The incident was reported to BTP at 9.20am.

“A man was arrested at the scene by BTP officers on suspicion of a public order offence and has been taken into custody.

“Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40.”

A TfL spokeswoman said: “There were minor delays on the Bakerloo line earlier this morning due to a verbal altercation between a couple passengers on a train at Charing Cross station.

“The train was held at the station for a short period of time while awaiting the arrival of the British Transport Police who were called to attend.”
