Canning Town station shut after fire alarm sprinklers cause flooding

A fire alert sparked rush hour chaos at Canning Town this morning - when it triggered flooding at the east London station.

Commuters took to Twitter in confusion after apparently contradictory explanations involving fire and flooding were given for the delays at the Newham interchange.

Responding to one, the official DLR Twitter account revealed: "It's both. A fire alarm set off sprinklers which caused flooding."

The Jubilee line's account confirmed no trains were stopping at the station: "Canning Town - station closed, flooding. All trains not stopping."

It prompted the Twittersphere to question "who broke Canning Town?"

Beth Fox ‏(@Beth_92x) wrote: "Someone broke canning town station," with Luke Sheldrick ‏(@an0key) asking: "Who broke canning town station? Own up."

Melle ‏(@LoveMelle) added: "Canning town station evacuated due to flood?!? I didn't even know it rained last night

And Douglas Johnson (‏@DouglasJohnson) joked: "Apparently Canning Town station is on fire AND flooded. Impressive."

Transport for London said the station reopened shortly after 8.30am.
