Commuters vented their fury as c2c services were cancelled causing chaos in east London.

The train company was forced to cancel services on Wednesday evening from Fenchurch Street due to damaged overhead electricity wires between West Ham and Barking.

As services ground to a halt, passengers complained of being struck on stationary trains for hours, while others claimed that staff were forced to close Fenchurch Street.

c2c said at about 7pm that services have resumed however crowd control measures were put in place at the station.

To add to commuter woes, a planned closure of the station was expected to go ahead at 8.30pm.

Some people to took to Twitter to vent their frustration, posting pictures as crowds amassed outside Fenchurch Street.

One wrote: “I don’t know how you think just closing Fenchurch Street Station and cancelling trains all the time is acceptable!!! The pic is of outside Fenchurch Street tonight!!!”

As people sought alternative routes, a signalling failure on the District line added to the problems amid reports of overcrowded trains.

A c2c spokesman said: "Due to damage to the overhead wires causing cancellations from Fenchurch Street and Greater Anglia also experiencing disruption, customers are advised to take the underground to Upminster.

"If you are able to travel later on this evening, this is also being advised."

National Rail have said that passengers may use their tickets on Greater Anglia, London Buses, London Underground and TfL Rail via any reasonable route.
