Footage shot by a passenger has emerged showing the moment a London-bound British Airways plane broke out in flames on a Las Vegas airport runway.

Dramatic video captured from inside the cabin shows thick black smoke violently billowing from the wing as fire threatens to engulf the aircraft.

Amid panic at the sight, a flight attendant can be heard saying: "Please remain seated."

The footage, of the incident at McCarran International Airport involving the BA2276 flight to Gatwick, has been obtained by ABC News.

The Boeing 777-200, which was carrying around 170 passengers and crew, was travelling at about 90mph when the flames broke out following a technical fault.

Passengers fled the aircraft using its inflatable slides, with some being accused of "endangering" the lives of others by pausing to pick up their luggage.

The captain, Chris Henkey, from Reading, was about to make his penultimate flight when the 10-hour flight had to be abandoned.

He told NBC News he is "unlikely" to make his final flight, which would have taken him to Barbados to join his daughter in his favourite holiday destination.

"It's safe to say I'm finished flying," Mr Henkey said.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) in the US is investigating the incident.
