After nearly four months of working from home, many people are getting sick of looking at themselves via a dreary webcam on the countless video conferencing calls that take place throughout the day.

The constant use of Zoom has even led to an increase in interest in plastic surgery and Botox as people are reporting feeling dissatisfied with their appearance on social video platforms.

A new app holds a solution. Camo turns your iPhone or iPad into a pro-quality webcam so you can benefit from not looking quite so drained in the process.

Created by Reincubate, a London-based app data company that helps people get more from their Apple devices and data, Camo is available to download from tomorrow (July 16). At the moment it only works for Macs but Windows support is coming soon.

“It’s a product I’ve wanted to make for a couple of years; it’s long frustrated me that users joining calls with their iPhones or iPads tend to get amazing video quality, whereas users on Macs and PCs don’t,” explained Reincubate CEO Aidan Fitzpatrick. “This is why I’m excited about the release of Reincubate Camo. After a lot of hard work, we’ve built something that I feel is rather special.”

Reincubate’s argument is that though Apple invests heavily in camera tech on its iPhones, it prioritises thinness on its laptop screens which means it would have to prioritise its design preferences to make its MacBook cameras better quality. Sure you can pay for an external webcam if you really want, but why not take advantage of the amazing camera you already have in your pocket? Camo lets you achieve this.

To get started, you first need to download the Camo Studio app on the Mac App Store and Camo on the iOS App Store and then connect your iPhone to your Mac. Once you’ve done this, you have to follow the instructions in the Camo Studio Mac app so you can use the app for things like Google Meet, Microsoft Teams and Zoom calls. If you have a tripod or something you can mount your iPhone on that will come in handy.

And then you’re off with the ability to look actually half-decent in a morning meeting without reaching for the make up brush. This will come in exceptionally handy if you’re applying for new roles and want to look your best on video chat.

To access features and filters for that airbrushed look, you’ll have to pay for it. A Camo subscription will cost £34.99 a year, which is much cheaper than buying a new webcam. The free version will allow 720p video along with a default wide or selfie lens. The paid version does Dark Mode support which will come in handy as we go into autumn and nights start to get shorter.
