It’s a staple joke in many a film, a put-upon father or husband is forced to sit for hours as their daughter / wife tries on every dress in a shop, hoping to find their perfect colour.

But a second pair of eyes might now be redundant after TikTokers have found and shared an artificial intelligence function that will perform the thankless task without complaint.

“I feel like I just paid a professional to analyse me,” Fitszeto said in a video after using an extension for AI bot ChatGPT to provide a colour analysis.

“It saved me a couple of hundred dollars!” Sharon Cancio said on her own video, explaining how to perform the colour-matching technique.

The function is getting similarly rave reviews from vloggers who are finding the perfect colour of outfit for their skin tone.

And it can be done for free without the need of an upgrade to ChatGPT plus or other such extensions.

Here is how it works in five easy steps.

How to complete a colour analysis on ChatGPT

Here is your step-by-step guide.

  1. Take a selfie with natural lighting. Do this without makeup.

  2. In an editing suite, draw over your selfie with a colour that you think matches. Then make a note of the colour code for your facial skin tone, eg. EABFAC.

  3. Do the same again for your eye colour and your hair colour.

  4. Go onto ChatGPT and type in the codes you have, eg. “Hi, my skin tone is EABFAC, my eyes are #412821 and my hair is #272622. What colour outfits would go well with my features?”

5. ChatGPT will then reply, eg.

“Your skin tone seems to be a warm, medium-light tone. With this combination of features, you may find that earthy tones and warm colours complement your complexion, eyes, and hair colour nicely. Here are some suggestions:

  1. Earthy tones such as olive green, burnt orange, mustard yellow, and terracotta.

  2. Warm neutrals like camel, taupe, and chocolate brown.

  3. Deep jewel tones such as burgundy, emerald green, and sapphire blue.

  4. Rich shades of red, like cranberry or brick red.

  5. Warm shades of purple, such as plum or mauve.

“Avoid colours that might wash you out or clash with your natural features, such as very cool or neon colours. Experiment with different shades within these colour families to find what suits you best and makes you feel confident and comfortable.”
