A small electric car that can be updated like a smartphone to become driverless will hit roads in 2020.

The Swedish-designed Uniti One car, which is fully digital, will include top-of-the-range systems that will eventually allow owners to upgrade to top tier Level Five — the most advanced level of autonomous driving.

The £20,000 car weighs 900kg and has a battery with enough power for a 150-mile journey.

Its creators say that, once approved for use, the car will gather data about its journeys as it goes, allowing it to adapt to its individual owner.

Manufacturing is due to begin next year at a pilot production plant in Silverstone Park.
