A hacking group has claimed responsibility for taking down Pokemon GO servers in an attack which left gamers furious and unable to play.

Cyber collective Poodlecorp revealed on Twitter that it was behind Saturday's action, which meant users of the augmented reality game were forced to let the virtual monsters roam free for hours

The claim has not yet been verified but the organisation tweeted: "PokemonGo #Offline #PoordleCorp."

A post from user @xotehpoodle, who claims to be the leader of the group, appeared to threaten gamers with more problems.

It said: "Just was a lil test, we will do something on a larger scale soon."

A second post said: "Honestly we have just been playing with pokemon."

While a third added: "Doing a full attack soon, stay tuned."

The hackers used a DDOS, or Distributed Denial of Service, attack which sees servers flooded with so many requests every second that they cannot cope.

Twitter user @Drxpdead-curtis wrote: "The Pokemon go servers are down again what is this hell."

And @TomBMax19, posted: "When the british summer weather is actually perfect for once and its the weekend and you're ready to catch pokemon and the servers are down."

Pokemon Go, which allows players to “catch” creatures in the real world, has soared in popularity since launching officially in the UK on Thursday. The app has caused controversy across the world since it launched last week.

The force had said it was concerned that the app could provide another online avenue for criminals to exploit.

The NSPCC have issued a warning to parents over the dangers of the game saying the app could be exploited by offenders wanting to find children.

The children's charity said in a statement: "It's deeply troubling that the app's owners have ignored many warning signals and well documented child safety concerns."
