London innovation centre Plexal has revealed the start-ups that will join its inaugural Plexiglass tech accelerator programme.

Plexal’s CEO Claire Cockerton announced the accelerator earlier this year which is only for women-led deep tech start-ups.

The accelerator programme, based at Here East in Stratford, is focused on championing innovative women who are using deep tech like artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality (AR) to change the world. It’s being run in partnership with the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) and Barclays Eagle Labs.

“The empowerment of women in the world of tech is essential, and something I feel very passionate about," Cockerton told the Standard.

“There is an abundance of female talent out there that has not been recognised for too long, and I’m delighted that we’re in a position to change this with our Plexiglass accelerator programme.”

Each Plexiglass chosen start-up will have access to free workspace at Plexal during the eight-week programme.

As well, they have access to free legal advice, accounting services, brand development, marketing support and leadership development.

At the end of the programme, the start-ups will be able to use all the knowledge they’ve learned to pitch to large corporations and prospective investors at a pitch event.

The initial Plexiglass programme was going to offer these services to only 10 companies but Cockerton says they had to expand this to 12 due to the wealth of great start-ups that applied.

“I was particularly impressed by the diversity of issues they are looking to tackle,” she said.

“From companies leveraging AI to maximise human performance to urban farms to an app that helps SMEs raise money via microloans, each start-up is incredibly distinct in what it offers and we’re excited to be a part of their growth journey.”
