A new youth panel is hoping to stumble upon the next Steve Jobs or Bill Gates in a search for the country's brightest technology stars.

Tech-savvy London school pupils are being called to apply to be a part of the UK's first Digital Youth Council to give teenagers a voice on technology issues in education.

A panel of selected students aged 13-17 will meet to share how technology is used in their respective schools as part of Generation Tech, a nationwide review of technology in education, launched by Virgin Media Business in April.

Later this year the panel will participate in a roundtable debate with education experts and liaise directly with the Department for Education to present their findings.

Education Minister Elizabeth Truss said: "Technology is everywhere and it's vital that children understand how to make it work for them.

"We are introducing rigorous new curricula in maths and computing which will teach children skills like coding and programming along with the maths which underpins computer science."

Schools across the UK are being asked to nominate their most technologically aware pupils to be a part of the council and submissions can take the form of a video, photo, written submission or piece of coding.

Founder of Virgin, Sir Richard Branson launched the Generation Tech project and said to potential applicants: "If you have a great story to share, a classroom that’s been transformed or an aspiring digital expert keen to share their views: we want to hear from you!”

Interested schools can make a submission by requesting a submission pack from the ‘Generation Tech’ website.
