Apple could be unveiling new headphones that plug into the lightning port of their devices, if this leaked image tells us anything.

A photo has emerged on Chinese social media site Weibo which shows a pair of official Apple headphones.

The picture adds extra weight to rumours that Apple are set to ditch the headphone jack from their portable devices.

With Apple expected to unveil a new iPhone model at the Apple Event in Cupertino, California, the headphones picture has led to speculation that the new phone could be the first to get rid of the universal 3.5mm headphone port.

The acquisition of Dr Dre’s headphone company Beats by Apple in 2014 sparked rumours that Apple would be working on lightning port and wireless headphones for the future – and it could already be here.

While the loss of the headphone jack would allow more freedom for the phone’s design, it could prove a divisive change to the smartphone – those who do not wish to use official Apple headphones would likely have to purchase an adapter in order to use their preferred set of cans.
