Hi tech street signs that change before your eyes could be coming to London

Fingertip control: The signs could point pedestrians to nearby restaurants or give updates on the best way to get home

Smart signs that show live information to events and even give news updates could soon become a common sight on the capital’s streets.

The signs contain an LCD screen, and its makers say they could be used at Wimbledon to show directions to different courts, showing match updates and even tweets from players.

They could also be used on streets to showing directions to nearby events, and at conferences to show directions to talks.

"We’re hoping they could eventually be on city streets everywhere," said Andrew Zolty of Breakfast, the New York firm behind the technology.

He revealed the firm was already in talks with dozens of firms in the capital to install the signs, including a sports arena, hotels and conference centres.

"At Wimbledon, for example, we can integrate social media updates easily and tell people not just what matches are taking place where, but the scores and other news.

"On road signs, we can include traffic information and directions to events, and several cities around the world, including London, have expressed an interest. Everyone ho sees the project comes up with a new use."

The firm also hopes to rent out the signs to locations such as conference centres, and is even building a version with a built in weather station.
