CES 2017: Merge VR's Holo Cube allows users to 'grab' holograms

A Rubik’s Cube-sized block allows users to “grab” holograms with their hand.

Merge VR’s Holo Cube is one of the simplest yet most mind-bending augmented reality toys at CES, bridging the gap between the physical and virtual worlds.

The outside of the cube has printed patterns on each side, which react when scanned by a smartphone’s camera to be brought to life.

The users mount their phone into virtual reality goggles to activate the cube to “create magical experiences for kids everywhere”.

Augmented reality: Holo Cube allows users to "grab" holograms

Holo Cube transformations include colourful electric pulses, a Minecraft-style puzzle and a virtual pet.

It can also be used to teach children about the body’s organs, allowing them to virtually hold a beating heart in the palm of their hand.

US-based Merge VR co-founder Andrew Trickett said: “It’s the world’s first holographic toy. When the app sees the markers [the cube] displays digital imagery, which can be interactive.

"It’s not just entertainment, it’s also educational. It can visualise different parts of the anatomy, such as the heart or skull, and also planets and chemical constructs.

“Virtual reality is cool but augmented reality melts people’s brains, they just love it and I think it has a much broader appeal because you can see the open world.”

Holo Cube is planned for launch in the UK later this year to accompany its £60 VR goggles.
