The latest instalment in the much-hyped Call of Duty franchise may have finally landed, but it was beset by technical problems from launch.

Gamers were left unable to log-on to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare this morning after reporting the servers were not working, following a huge influx of players once it went live.

And according to Forbes, some Xbox users were also reporting that it was causing hard crashes on their consoles mid-game - but Infinity Ward has been quick in their attempts to rectify the problems.

Not only did the developer announced earlier this morning that the servers were back online, but also tweeted that they were looking into the reports of Xboxes crashing.

But despite the somewhat sticky start, Modern Warfare is winning plaudits for its graphics and gameplay, while being hailed as a return to the groundbreaking 2007 original of the same name.

With the game out now, here's all you need to know about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

What's new in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare?

Activision

Essentially a reboot of 2007's Modern Warfare, the storyline is based in the 21st century and promises to be more realistic than other games in the franchise, featuring improved strategic, emotional and tactical gameplay.

In particular, the game's plot has seen a significant overhaul from recent Call of Duty titles, with features such as zombies and jetpacks declining to make an appearance this time. Instead, there is more of a focus on realism to make for a much more mature game.

More character-based than previous games, Modern Warfare sees the return of faces such as Captain John Price, a crucial character in the series. The game will also have a single-player campaign as well as multi-player action.

The game has seen a complete weapon overhaul too, featuring the most choices in the franchise's history, while the traditional season pass has been scrapped.

Perhaps the biggest change, however, is the introduction of cross-platform functionality for the first time in the franchise. This means gamers on the PC, PS4 and Xbox One can play simultaneously.
