A businessman found his iPhone in a rural field by using an app after it fell more than 9,000 feet from a plane.

Ben Wilson says his phone was "scratched a bit" but still in working condition after the mishap on a flight from Houston, Texas.

He had been travelling home with a pilot in a Beechcraft Bonanza, a small light aircraft, when a pressure drop caused the passenger door to slightly open.

Upon landing, Mr Wilson realised his iPhone had been sucked out of the plane during the mishap.

Mr Wilson, owner of Gas Corporation of America, told the Wichita Falls Times Record News: "The pressure popped and a newspaper flew out but I didn’t see the phone go. After we got back I looked for it on the floor (of the plane) and in my briefcase but couldn’t find it."

So when he arrived at Kickapoo Airport, his destination, he used an app to narrow the search to Jacksboro, more than 50 miles away, and embarked on their search.

“It was by the side of the road south of Jacksboro, under a mesquite tree," he said.

"It was in one piece, scratched a bit on the corners but it still worked."
