The technology behind bitcoin could be used in future to do everything from proving your age in a bar to increasing government transparency, a leading experts in the field said today.

Start-up founder Tiana Laurence, 33, said public services could use the permanent digital ledger, called blockchain, to increase trust in information.

Bitcoin uses the blockchain to record all transactions and this mathematical data cannot be doctored.

Ms Laurence, author of Blockchain for Dummies, said the technology is likely to be used by organisations who need to prove goods, services and even evidence were sent from A to B — which can help prevent fraud and corruption.

Speaking after London Blockchain Week, Ms Laurence said it could help over-18s prove their age without revealing their identity, or NHS doctors to make medical records “private but verifiable”.
