Apple sells record nine million new iPhones

Apple has announced it has sold a record-breaking nine million new iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c models in just three days since the launch.

Demand for the iPhone 5s has exceeded initial supply, with many online orders scheduled to be shipped in the coming weeks.

The new 5s model has a fingerprint sensor built into the phone’s main button. The cheaper 5c comes with a plastic back in a choice of colours.

“This is our best iPhone launch yet – more than nine million new iPhones sold – a new record for first weekend sales,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO.

“The demand for the new iPhones has been incredible, and while we’ve sold out of our initial supply of iPhone 5s, stores continue to receive new iPhone shipments regularly. We appreciate everyone’s patience and are working hard to build enough new iPhones for everyone.”

The company’s shares rose almost six per cent following the announcement.

Apple said it expected sales in its fourth quarter to be at the higher end of its previous announced range of between $34 billion and $37 billion.
