If you run out of space for photos and apps on your iPhone, you’ll now have to pay extra for more storage.

This week, Apple has quietly increased the cost of its trio of iCloud+ storage subscriptions by an average 25 per cent in the UK.

These were previously priced at £0.79 per month for 50GB of storage, £2.49 per month for 200GB, and £6.99 per month for 2TB.

However, Apple has now upped the charges to £0.99 per month, £2.99 per month, and £8.99 per month, respectively.

Along with the UK, the new costs have been spotted in multiple countries, but they don’t apply to the US. The price rise could be linked to changes in foreign currency exchange rates, according to Apple news site 9 to 5 Mac.

It’s not like Apple is running low on cash: The company raked in a record-breaking $20.9 billion in services revenue (£16.52 bn), including iCloud subscriptions, in the three months between February and April.

The Standard has reached out to Apple for comment.

For the uninitiated, Apple’s iCloud service essentially lets you pay to bump up the 5GB of online storage available on your device for free.

While the latest iPhones pack enough on-device storage to probably satisfy even the most voracious power users — ranging from 128GB all the way up to 1TB on the most high-end models — older devices offer far less space.

As recently as 2020, the entry-level iPhone 12 came with just 64GB of storage. This can easily be clogged up by new iOS downloads, pics, WhatsApp files, and bloated apps, meaning you’ll probably be considering upgrading to iCloud+ soon enough.

Along with the extra storage, the subscription also comes with additional privacy-oriented perks, such as a VPN-style feature called iCloud Private Relay and Hide My Email, which generates an anonymous email address for when you don’t want to share your details with a website.

If you’re already signed up to other Apple services, it may be cheaper to grab an Apple One bundle. The subscription includes iCloud+ (50GB), Apple TV+, Apple Music, and Apple Arcade for £16.95 per month. Families and friends, meanwhile, can pay £22.95 to share with up to five people, with 200GB of storage thrown in for good measure.

Earlier this week, Apple announced that it was sunsetting its early foray into the world of cloud storage, My Photo Stream, on July 26.
