Adobe’s Photoshop programme is still the number one when it comes to editing pictures and photos, but it’s not the easiest to get your head around.

A new app is about to make things all a lot easier. The new Photoshop Camera app, announced today at Adobe’s annual MAX conference, uses the company’s artificial intelligence, Sensei, to suggest filters and lenses for you to improve your photographs.

You can take photos directly in the Photoshop Camera app or take them on your normal smartphone camera and access them through the camera roll. It’s in the editing process that Sensei really gets to work. The AI can recognise the subject in the photo, such as portrait, landscape or food, and recommend which filter to use to simplify editing the picture.

Sensei can also understand the technical content of the photo, such as tonality, and automatically adjust the picture so it looks its best.

If you’re not too impressed with Sensei’s suggestions then there is also a settings tab which allows you to adjust details including shadows and exposure yourself.

It looks like Adobe is also drawing on influences from Instagram and Snapchat for the Photoshop Camera app. People who download the app will be able to access a curated feed on lenses made by artists and influencers, such as Gen Z star Billie Eilish. Just like on Instagram or Snapchat, you can apply a limited-edition Billie lens, inspired by her songs and music videos, to your photo before posting it to social media or saving it to your camera roll.

Artists willing to get involved can create custom lenses for the app using the standard Photoshop programme. You can sign up for early access here.

Adobe says it is committed to investing in accessible tools, and an app like Photoshop Camera is a way to democratise creativity. It’s true that Photoshop has always led the way when it comes to picture editing but the question is where this new Camera app will fit in the crowded picture editing space. Already, there’s FaceTune and VSCO, which has spawned its own subculture, or people can edit photos and add AR lenses in Instagram and Snapchat.

It seems like Adobe is directly courting the social media crowd. As well as Photoshop Camera, it has announced an update to its Premiere Rush video-editing app so it works with TikTok. Tiktok users can edit their videos, adding transitions and colour filters, before publishing directly to the platform.
