NASA has revealed that it has created an independent study team dedicated to researching unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), commonly known as UFOs.

The team consists of 16 scientists and began its nine-month project on Monday, October 24, observing events in the sky that cannot be identified as aircraft or other known phenomena. The team members’ specialisms range from physics and aviation to oceanography and technology.

They will look at how data gathered by civilian government entities, commercial data and other information sources can be analysed to shed light on UAPs, with the goal of creating a data set for analysis by NASA. They will only focus on unclassified data.

Talking about the new team, NASA’s associate administrator of the Science Mission Directorate, Thomas Zurbuchen, said: “Exploring the unknown in space and the atmosphere is at the heart of who we are at NASA. Understanding the data we have surrounding unidentified aerial phenomena is critical to helping us draw scientific conclusions about what is happening in our skies. Data is the language of scientists and makes the unexplainable, explainable.”

Understanding UAPs will help countless agencies. NASA will have a better understanding of how it can make aircraft safe based on its findings on UAPs, and countries across the globe can refer to the data to better their security against potential UAPs.

Daniel Evans, who is leading the study, shared: “NASA has brought together some of the world’s leading scientists, data and artificial intelligence practitioners, aerospace safety experts, all with a specific charge, which is to tell us how to apply the full focus of science and data to UAP.

“The findings will be released to the public in conjunction with NASA’s principles of transparency, openness and scientific integrity.”
