With the Duchess of Sussex’s 'late April/early May' due date upon us, the world is waiting on the arrival of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s first child.

The pair has decided they want to “celebrate privately as a new family” when their bundle of joy arrives, which could give the Sussexes a little extra time to settle on a royal baby name too.

Two of the most popular names in the running have a close connection to Princess Diana, as according to a royal expert they were contenders for her own sons’ names.

According to bookmakers Ladbrokes, two frontrunners if the Duchess of Sussex has a boy are Albert (with odds of 12/1) and Arthur (16/1).

Andrew Morton, the royal biographer of Diana: Her True Story - In Her Own Words, claims that both names were originally vetoed by Diana.

Morton claimed after Diana picked her sons names she reportedly said, “The alternative was Arthur and Albert. No thank you.”

“There weren’t fights over it,” she is said to have continued. “It was just a fait accompli.”

In what appeared to be a compromise, the names eventually made their way onto hers sons’ birth certificates: Albert into Henry Charles Albert David (Prince Harry’s full name) and Arthur into his elder brother’s name: William Arthur Philip Louis.

While there are a number of potential royal baby names in the mix, Princess Diana’s own name is believed to be a strong choice for the couple.

Ladbrokes' royal baby odds revealed Diana was the second most popular choice for gamblers at 6/1, though Queen Elizabeth’s name reigned supreme with higher odds of 5/1.

Other strong contenders for Prince Harry and Meghan’s baby name include Philip (after Prince Harry’s grandfather), which is tied with Albert at 12/1 for most likely boys’ name. James is also tied with Arthur for second most likely boys’ name (16/1).

If the couple have a girl, many believe other potential name choices could be Grace (8/1) and Victoria (8/1).

Of course, Prince Harry and Meghan could decide to go rogue with one of the most popular baby names of 2019. Nameberry revealed earlier this year that Posie, Isla, Olivia, Aurora and Maeve were the five top girls’ names while Milo, Jasper, Atticus, Theodore and Silas came up high in the boys bracket.
