Zac Goldsmith proclaimed himself “hugely excited” today after wife Alice gave birth to a daughter.

Electioneering halted as Edie Goldsmith arrived, weighing in at 7.7 pounds, at 4.36am yesterday.

“We’re all hugely excited to welcome Edie to the family,” he told the Standard. “She and her mum are doing really well.”

Tonight Mr Goldsmith will hit the political comeback trail, seeking the Tory nomination to run again in his old seat of Richmond Park, which he lost to Liberal Democrat Sarah Olney.

He is in the final three against Tooting employment barrister Laura Farris and Richmond activist Luke Parker, a Remain campaigner.

A Lib Dem spokesman said: “We beat Zac Goldsmith once, we will beat him again.”

Edie is the second daughter of Mr Goldsmith and wife Alice Rothschild, who also have a son. The former MP has three children from his first marriage.
